I challenge you yet again! Time yourself as you try to run 1.5 miles. If you cannot run the entire time, walk when you need to but challenge yourself by walking a little and running a little. Then go to: www.exrx.net/Calculators/OneAndHalf.html. There is a long equation I could give you to configure your fitness level and to practice your math skills, but I thought that the website would be easier and less stressful! The website will calculate your current fitness level after you enter your gender, age and time in which you completed the 1.5 mile run. Then, try to run the 1.5 miles each day, and in three months check the website again. I bet you’ll improve your time and fitness level! (Don't forget to write down your times and fitness levels so you can compare them in a few months.)
If you have any questions about anything related to health, fitness or nutrition - please make a comment on the blog and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
Happy running/jogging!

How would this translate distance/time wise for swimming? I have bad knees but aquatic exercise is fine.
Excellent question!
There are MANY cardiovascular tests out there. But some are not valid and reliable for all individuals.
I am a cyclist myself, and I find it difficult to find test that fit my needs so I understand where you are coming from.
The following link is a GREAT link to a swimming test to check your cardiovascular fitness: http://www.umich.edu/~exphysio/mvs.240/
AdditonalLabs/SwimVOmax.test.3.2.pdf
When I teach academic courses, I use similar worksheets because they are simple to understand, and you can easily print it out and take it with you on your next swim workout.
Like I said before, there are many tests out there. And it is likely for one to do poorly on a fitness test if it is not something one normally does. For example, a great cyclist or swimmer might perform poorly on a running test and vice versa.
Hopefully this is something useful for you and other swimmers. If you are not a lap swimmer but more of an aqua fitness class participant I do know of an aqua swim test that you can take in the shallow end. If you would like information on that, please ask!
Let me know if you have any more questions!
